Meet The Team
MEET TEAM LION
The Golden Lion is the oldest remaining pub in Padstow, a Grade II listed building first recorded in 1783. Originally built as a public house with its own malt house, it has long been at the heart of the community. Once hosting auctions of boats and goods, and today continuing as a place where people come together.
Affectionately known as “The Lion,” the building has evolved over the years. Careful refurbishment has brought many of its original features back to life, from the parquet hardwood floors and low ceilings to the wooden beams made from repurposed ship masts. Its uneven floors, cosy corners and hidden nooks all add to its unique charm.
The Lion is also steeped in local tradition, playing a central role in Padstow’s May Day celebrations as the stable of the ‘Old Oss.’ Each year on May 1st, music, dancing and celebration spill out from the pub to welcome the arrival of summer.
The pub has been in the Rickard family for nearly 40 years, with Martin and Sarah proudly running it since 2005. Over that time, the food has grown into a more varied and refined offering, while still keeping the much-loved Sunday roast as popular as ever!
Behind the scenes, Team Lion is what truly makes the place special. You’ll find familiar faces you may recognise alongside some new ones too, all bringing their own bit of Lion charm. We’re a friendly bunch who enjoy a bit of banter, and we do our best to make sure everyone feels right at home from the moment they walk through the door.
Alongside great food, we offer a wide selection of local beers, lagers and ciders, as well as a carefully chosen wine list. Our three bed and breakfast rooms have also been thoughtfully refurbished, reflecting Sarah’s passion for interiors and eye for detail.
At The Golden Lion, we pride ourselves on being welcoming, family-friendly and down to earth place, to enjoy good food, good drink and good company. We like to give that nostalgic feeling!
We look forward to welcoming you.
Martin and Sarah
